River Kaitum, is a river with an almost legendary reputation in Sweden. It flows through a beautiful and varying mountain area. To the west there’s the two lakes that marks the beginning of the river, surrounded by high mountains. Between the two lakes, upper and lower Lake Kaitumjaure, lies the legendary Tjirtjam Rapids known for its excellent flyfishing for arctic char. The char will mostly be found in the upper part of the rapids whilst trout and grayling are more frequent in the lower part.

Within a couple of kilometres walk from the upper Kaitum Lake You will find the source flows Kaitumjokk Creek, Tjaktjajokk Creek, Kaukuljokk Creek and Skartajokk Creek but also the lakes Kaukaljaure and Malikjaure, the latter with a population of large arctic char.

At the lower end of the lower Lake Kaitumjaure, the Tjuonajokk fishing camp. Tjuonajokk fishing camp has been most Swedish fly fishermen’s dream vacation, why this is so? Well , make a guess!

Eastward from the lower Lake Kaitumjaure the river find its way through a mountain birch forest alternating between calmer stretches and rapids. In this part of the river You will find some of the largest grayling in the country, but also really big trout. Famous rapids like Tajvek Rapid, Kukkasavo Rapid, Lietiksavo Rapid and Riehkku Rapid follows one after another. Further downstream, the tributary Tertojokk makes its entrance. The stretch from Lietiksavo to the outlet of Tertojokk is under quota restrictions. This means that for 100 sek/day (year 2002) You and Your companions can fish this stretch for a period of three days. Permit for this part of the creek must be applied for in writing before the last of April. The stretch is fly only.

Further down we reach Village Kaitum where the road ends or begins depending which way You want to see it. Past another village, Village Killinge with its magnificent waterfall Killingelinkka, and we reach Village Lappesuando where River Kaitum ends as it enters River Kalix. At this point the Kaitum River has travelled 160 kilometres.
