Fraser Island
On the eastcoast in Queensland, not more than four hours with car from Brisbane, lies the worlds largest sand island. It's 120 km long and 15 km wide. In the early 90:s the nature activist had a rough fight with several mining companys. Finally all companys left the island and now it is counted as one of the earths worlds-inheritance. Lycky for all backpackers because it's really something to go there. Fraser Island is best reached by ferry from Hervey bay. Click here to see a map over the island. The best way to explore the island is with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Buy a campingpermission and rent a car at Harvey bay. Another way can be to chek in at Eurong Beach Resort for 17A$ per night (4 beds in every cabin) Then you will also have acces to resturang/pool/coffeshop/beergarden/Beachbar. You can also get some camping gear here. Read more below.

The island consist mostly by sand covered with vegetation. It has more than 40 small lakes. Inside the vegetation it looks like a djungle.
But the whole island is not covered with djungle. Sometimes you find yourself struggling through a huge sandarea.
The best way (only way accept walking) to transport from one point to another is with a 4-wd Jeep. The only real roads are found inside the resort areas. You can also rent a tour with a single-engine plane. The runway is of course on the beach
The eastern side of the island, along the beach, is working as a mainroad for vehicles Halfway on the coast lies Eli creek. A lovely place with a freshwater spring. Here you can walk upstreams the small river and then just flow backwards. Really cool.
How do you live at the island? Well, first of all, there's alots of resorts which are rather expensive. The place on the picture is Happy Valley with both resturannt and pool. According to me the best way to live here is with your tent. A tent usually come with the car when you rent it. There is only one backpackerplace (please let me know if I'm wrong). Eurong beach resort is situated in the south east part of the island.
Camping is the "real" modell for the true backpacker. Buy a camping ticket which allows you to camp almost everywher on the island for 3.50A$ per night and person. If you are afraid of camping alone in the dark there's 8 campingspots where you have toilets and shower.
Ships name is Maheno and lies on the eastern coast. She belonged to the Tasmanian navy in around 1905. She wrecked on her last journey heading for Sydney. But she wanted to have another destiny instead of someones woodfire.
