Gameboy Color

Worms got its sequel on PC and other consoles, so why shouldn't it make a comeback for the Gameboy aswell? They waited until Worms: Armageddon instead of Worms 2, but they made a smart move and converted it for the new Color Gameboy which, like the name says, offer colors to the games instead of the old dull Gameboy greyscale. This game was really something I've always wanted, I mean I had visions of what it would be playing a real portable W:A where ever I wanted. So, did it turn out to be that great game? Well, almost. I'll explain below.

Overall rating out of five worms:

Why not five worms?
This is one of those games I'd really like to give five worms. But the problem is that it isn't really that good. It not being converted to the Gameboy Color by Team17 may be one of the reasons why it is like this. The guys who converted the game seem to know how to make games, but not how to make Worms games. I'm quite sure they had never played any other Worms game when they made the conversion. Which is bad, because if they had, I'm positive it would have been much better. Oh well, it's still an OK game, definately worth buying if you like Worms, and of course W:A especially.

The best thing about the game is probably the graphics. The level gfx is fabolous, and uses the Gameboy Color palette fully out. The levels themselves are not randomized, which is both good and bad in different ways. But the design is good and most of them are very playable. A new thing is also the cave maps which didn't exist in the original Worms GB. The number of weapons included is great, but how the weapons and most important of all how the explosions work are worse than you could expect. The explosions hardly push worms anywhere, no matter where you hit 'em. And it's a complete mystery how you get the max damage hit, it's different for all the weapons.

But the bad things don't end there. This only the beginning. Listing *all* the things that make this game not as good is of no use, they are simply too many. But I'll tell you about the most important ones. Battery backup. There is none. WHY. I don't know the answer to that question, but obviously as I said previously, these guys who converted the game don't know what makes Worms Worms. You just have to be able to save your schemes and your team names, otherwise it's not fun. Especially not when naming your worms with the use of the up and down button takes an eternity. In addition to that you can't see your worms' names in the game. So stupid. WHY? That's what you want the names for! You can't exit the game when you're playing, you have to turn off the Gameboy (irritating when you're playing many rounds). The CPU players are complete morons (This one's a classic though), about the only thing they do is shooting full-power bazookas in the direction of an enemy worm. No matter if there's firm ground in the way. And the list goes on.

So what did I give this game four worms for? Afterall, it's still Worms. There are many fun weapons. There are lots of cool landscapes to play on. If you like Worms you'll like it when you've gotten over all the things that are so poorly done. Phew! Finally! Hope you liked that long review, it wasn't meant to be like this at first, but oh well.

The game itself looks a little like this. Ain't those colors nice, eh?

Jetpack Cheat
How to get extra time for the jetpack (like it wasn't more than enough already...): Normally, the jetpack only lasts twenty seconds. Change weapons, then return to get twenty seconds back. You must use this before you run out of time.

Terrain Theme Codes
W:A GBC has a peculiar system of level gaining. Instead of having all the terrains available from start, you only have a few and gain more as you win against the computer. As the terrains you gain have codes which make them available, I've decided to put the ones I've found so far here. So you can have a look. Just press the A-button on the level selection screen and input the correct code to lock up the landscape. As a cool bonus, all the level themes have a well-drawed opening screen before you play them to get you in the right mood ;)

Instead of writing down the code symbols in words, I decided to try to paint them as close to what they look like in the game as possible. Which means the colors might not be right, forgive me. Atleast I tried :) Oh and I left out the default level codes too, there's really no need for them here as they are already activated and available.

Theme Code
Construction Yard
Fruits
Pirate
Hell
Egypt
Tools
Camp/Treehut
Computer/Chip
Medieval
Nature/Garden

That's all of them so far. If you've discovered one that's not listed here, please do mail me about it. It would be appreciated.
