(Vijai gave this interview at the shooting spot. That shooting work had started at 6 a.m. on that day. The previous day Vijai was working in K.S.Ravikumar's "Minsaara Kannaa" shooting which exteded upto 2 a.m. the next day, ie. the interview day).
Question: You are working very hard both night and day! Don't you feel any aversion towards such type of (restless) work?
Answer: I've come to this profession only as per my own liking and willingness! So there's no question of any 'aversion' at all! Apart from that, there's not going to be night and day shooting like this all through the month. The pinch of this type of hard-work may be felt if there's hectic day and night shooting daily. But such type of tight work only comes once in 10 days! That's all!
Question: The shooting work is conducted in lightning speed...When does "Minsaara Kannaa" comes to screen?
Answer: It may get released at the end of August. Or it may be released in the first week of September.
Question: In "Minsaara Kannaa" what type of role do you have? In "Nenjinile" you were the asistant of a 'dhadha'. Do you have a negative role in this film also? Or would it be a controversial one?
Answer: None of the two! Throughout the film it's only action, action and action.....There are also scenes of love added to that.
Question: What's your opinion regarding Ajith's "Vaali" released recently?
Answer: I liked it very much. I too wish to act in such a style! But the same type of opportunity haven't arisen yet! Now I have got one good story....I will act in the film based on it soon!
Question: You are going to celebrate your birthday on 22nd of June. What difference do you feel between your birthdays that you celebrated once upon a time when you were a small boy and those being celebrated now after you have attained wordly wisdom?
Answer: Untill
now, I haven't celebrated my birthdays in a grand way by cutting cake and
all! All that I was doing was going out for dinners along with my friends!
This year, on my birthday, I had shooting in
Ootty.

Question: In connection with your birthday, you distributed free rice, last year! Recently you have presented free books and notebooks for 50 thousand poor students. In cineworld Vijayakanth sir has been giving away such aids....Shall we say that you, who have accepted Vijayakanth as your guide, is doing such helps only on that basis?
Answer: There's no connection whatever between these sort of helps and my birthday! We had already asked permission from Education Minister Anbazhagan for participating in this function. He allotted a date only now. So we conducted these functions now. Things have just coincided. That's all. We have successfully accomplished these functions by availing the services of our fans association's office bearers of respective districts.
In fact, by way of request, I had put forth certain conditions to my father. As per those conditions I had insisted that taking photographs of the function events and giving coverage in Newspapers should be avoided. I wished that what we do as real help shouldn't get the colour of self-advertisement! But, pushing aside all such restrictions the matters have come out to reach the public!
Question: The recent releases acted by you "Thullaatha Manamum, Thullum" and "Yentrentrum Kaathal" both have got success!. Especially the film "Thullaatha Manamum Thullum" has proved to be a super-hit! Have these successes in the beginning of the year given satisfaction to you?
Answer: I'm happy over the results of both these films. But it can't be said that I have attained very great satisfaction! I wish to achieve still greater things!
Question: To what film would you point to as your favourite, would-be hit project, among the films that are about to be released this year?
Answer: All the films I'm acting in now are having unique qualities! Each of them has good story value. I have committed to act in them thinking that all of them would become hit films!
My recent films "Nenjinile" and "Minsaara Kannaa" each has a story base that differs one from the other. The story of "Nenjinile" is tragic. My character in it makes every one of the audiences grow impatient with the burning question, "Won't this man smile at all? Exactly the opposite type of role has been played by me in the film "Minsaara Kannaa". This role induces the audiences to feel, "Won't this man shut up his mouth at all?". To that extent mine is portrayed as an active, witty and jovial type of personality in the film!
Question: You are acting for the first time under director K.S.Ravikumar's direction. What new techniques do you have learnt from him?
Answer: This is for the first time that I'm acting in Ravikumar sir's direction. For a very long time, I was having the desire to act in his direction! Only now my wish has got fulfilled.
Generally, I need to work with a director for atleast three months to finish my role in his film. In such times w lot of new matters from that director.
Recently I have finished working under his direction in "Nenjinile". I had heard others say that only my father is the fastest technician in direction work! But only now it's known that K.S.Ravikumar directs faster than my father. In fact the name "Minsaara Kannaa" very aptly suits only Ravikumar sir! To that extent he's very fast in his work. I like very much the style in which he teaches in his own, individualistic way how even the small, small reactions in the film should be enacted by the artist!
In 'Minsaara Kannaa", in some of the shots I had very long dialogues. The director used to hand over into my hands in the morning itself, at the shooting spot, the dialogue I had to speak... While giving it, he would also demonstrate before me, doing model acting, how I should act it while in the shot. I would register it, as it is, in my mind! Then adding my own, small, small changes in it, I myself will perform, as a rehearsal, in front of him. Some semblance of Ravikumar sir's style will also be seen in my actions! He might then also suggest some changes in my way of doing things.
You can just imagine from the words of director K.S.Ravikumar sir himself, who has said: 'I'm going to project a Vijai of new style in this film who would look different from the Vijai seen in the other films!'
Question: Vijai-Ramba
alliance seems to continue from film to film! Starting from "Ninaiththen
Vanthaai" it continues through films like
"Yentrentrum Kaathal"
and "Minsaara Kannaa". What's
the secret behind this?
Is it because of any 'raasi'
that fetches success?
Answer: Only acting in films is my duty. The directors as well as producers book the heroines for their films. So only they have to answer your question. It may also be because of what you called 'Vetri Koottany raasi'!
Question: You might have received so many love letters from your female fans in the beginning. Do such letters of 'longing' continue to come to you even after your engagement for marriage?
Answer: When my marriage date got fixed , so many letters reflecting such feelings of longing came to me. Only to avoid such situations, I used to bring to light, in all my media interviews, the sad memories of my late sister, thereby driving home the point that I was always considering all my male and female fans only as my brothers and sisters who could give me some kind of solace! Such interviews gradually strenghthened my brotherly relaionship with my male and female fans! Now letters expressing love feelings have stopped coming to me. I think they (fans) are all happily awaiting my marriage!
Question: Is there in your mind any imaginary
picture as to how an ideal girl should be? According to that concept which
girl would you point to as having those ideal virtues, either in the field
of cinema or real life?
Answer: I have often told my father that it's a must that the one who would become my wife should have the qualities of my mother.
It's because, her very kind approach towards people, the extraordinary care she takes even on small, small, household affairs, the way in which she treats relatives---all these matters have attracted me very much. Not only me, but everyone likes to have such a wife who has the good qualities of his mother! In that I have the same, normal expectations like all the others!
Question: If your wife too wants to enter into cinema profession after marriage, would you permit that?
Answer: I think it's enough that the person called wife stops at the level of being a good family girl! Sangeetha is presently studying Medical Science. After marriage, if she likes to pursue further studies, I will permit her to carry on postal studies.
Father entertains the idea of constructing a three star hotel. If his wish
comes true, my wife may take up it's management responsibility. But I would
not at all like her stepping into cinema for whatever may be reason!
Question: What are your precautionary plans for the career-victory of the individual called the actor Vijai?
Answer: I don't have such plans! In the future also I would adopt only the same method which I follow now ---ie. I would first sit for (hearing) story narration before I commit for acting in the film. I won't take even a single percent of extra effort other than the normal level of work I'm putting in now!
It's my wish that I should act in different sorts of roles, which are novel and unique in terms of their scope for action and the make-up, as is the case with Kamal sir. But my present age and my personal physical stature and appearance prevent this. After 2 years from now I will act in a number of different sorts of films.
As far as I'm concerned I don't bother about my image! Within those 2 hours, during when I sit for listening to story narration, if I come to like the story I will immediately agree to act in it. Only after that I will see who the producer is and who's going to be the director of the film! Now I have got the desire to act in the films created by big, big directors and producers. But always the story selection remains my first and basic priority. It's all only the story, story and story!
Question: In every story you tell (teach) a message....When this idea did occur to you?
Answer: The chance of telling a message first came through the film "Poove Unakkaaka". There was also a great reception for that from the audience. Only from that onwards the idea of telling a message in each of my film occurred to me.
Question: You have acted with Isha Gopigar in "Nenjinile". Is there any salient feature about her that made you stand awe-struck?
Answer: Having been awe-struck by the realistic way of her acting in the film "Kaathal Kavithai" I just had requested my father to fix her opposite me in a film to do the lead role.
The fact that herself not knowing even 20% of Tamil, she's able to stun us this much through her acting has really created within me a great sense of surprise and wonder! It's very, very hard to act in a language whose meaning is not known than acting in a known-language film! She has mucked up Tamil language in a very natural way and thus has acted well! If I happen to act in a film whose languge is not known to me I can't perform in the normal way.
Question: Among the current films you are doing now, which one you are awaiting with more expectation?
Answer: I'm acting only with the hope that all my films should become great hits! A film's success or failure isn't in our hand! Isn't it so? "Minsaara Kannaa" is a good film of unique type. I haven't yet heard the story narration of Fazil sir's film in which I'm about to act. I believe that this new film also is certainly going to be hit film like "Kaathalukku Mariyathai"!
(Concluded).
