Morly Grey - The Only Truth
Unofficial page

Thanks to Mark Roller for some of the info added to this side.

Morly Grey released their 1:st and only album The Only Truth in 1972,
NOT 1969 as told in some discographies and books.

Some recording dates
1971, at Cleveland Recording Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio. Engineering: Ken Hamen.
1972, at Peppermint Studios, Youngstown, Ohio. Engineering: Gary Rhamy.

First drummer Paul Cassidy was fired after the recordings was done and Bob Lanave took his place.
The group kept side one but recorded a new side two with the new drummer and also changed the album title
after the new track "The Only Truth". So there are two drummers on the album!

Members
Tim Roller,  guitar
Mark Roller,  bass, vocals
1:st drummer: Paul Cassidy, R.I.P. died March 2001.
2:nd drummer: Bob Lanave, drums, percussion, vocals

Producer
Floyd Phillips

It was released on the Starshine label and have the number 69000 and included a free poster.

Tracks; Peace Officer (5:30), You Came To Me (4:12), Who can I Say You Are (3:40), I´m Afraid (4:32),
Our Time (6:29), After Me Again (3:07), Feeling For You, A (2:33), Only Truth, The (17:02).

They had one single out at the time, What Can I Say You Are / You Came To Me.   Starshine Records # 7201, 1972.
After Me Again / A Feeling For YouStarchine Records # 7202.
There was also another single, Be Your King / I´ll Space You. Starshine Records # 7202.
This second single was probably released in the late 80s or early 90s even if the label says 1972.

A curiosity is that the label on the first single says that both tracks are from the album "The First Supper".
I was contacted by Mark Roller who told me that "The First Supper" was the first name intended for the album and there was also art work done for it. This art work later became the poster issued with the album.
Cover design and art work for the released "The Only Truth" album is by Carol Pawlich.

In the late 80s, circa 1986-88, the original album was repressed again.
There have also been other counterfeits / bootlegs of it. I´m told some even have the group name
misspelled Morley Grey!! There have also been a cd on the label Flash # 52 in the 90s.

Now there is a vinyl reissue out on the Akarma label too, complete with the poster.

Probably all mistakes of the release date come from the album # 69000.

Morly Grey stopped and the members went their own ways for years but between 1995 and 1997
Mark, Tim and Bob recorded several tracks in their old style and sound.
They had great fun doing this but this project stopped when Bob Lanave got problems
with his heart and got through a by-pass operation. He´s ok now.

In Mars 2000, they are talking about finish the recordings. If there will be an album, will only the future show.
I know Mark and Co would love to have a new album out, so let´s hope it will happen.

If You have more info to add, please contact me
For ex. history, what they do today, photos, other records, presses etc.
Some other Starshine Records groups that released singles was;

Freeman Sound, Stars And Stripes, Travis, and Biggy Rat.

Some info about Biggy Rat. It´s Kevin McIlvaine who played with them off and on between 1974 and 1980 that contacted me about this. He played with them after they released their single. In the mid 70s Kevin and Bob Lanave from Morly Grey played together in the band Clockwork and now they are in a band called GoldieRox!

Clockwork had an album out in 1973 but that was before Kevin or Bob was in the band.

Biggy Rat started out in 1970 ca and the members was:

Jim ( Gus ) Gustafson, guitar
Scott Hunter, bass
Gary DiPasquale, drums
Shirliann Shank, vocal, dead in 1997 of cancer.

They added the keyboard player Frank Amedia and went to Nashville and recorded an album with Leland Rogers
( Kenny Rogers brother ) as producer. This album was never released.
I´m told that Billy Cox ( Jimi Hendrix´ Band of Gypsies ), was involved in this album too but it´s not clear how.

Jim Gustafson went on to Poobah and more info about them can be found here.
Scott Hunter formed the band Brier Hill with his brother Chris in the mid 80s and they played a sort of country / rock.

Biggy Rat - Look Insife Yerself / I´m A Woman (  1970 Starshine )

Thanks to all of You that shared Your knowledge about this label and the different bands.
